Credentialing

Credentialing with the health authorities or through the ºÚÁÏÉç ensures physicians and surgeons working in diagnostic services have the training experience and ability to perform the services provided.

BC Medical Quality Initiative (BCMQI)

The BC MQI privileging dictionaries outline the credentials required for the following:

  • performing diagnostic services
  • interpreting diagnostic services
  • identifying diagnostic services that are considered core or non-core privileges

The BC MQI dictionaries provide the credentialing requirements for privileging within the health authority facilities. The DAP has accepted these dictionaries for identifying physicians who meet the requirements for diagnostic services.

In cases where physicians do not hold privileges in a health authority facility and wish to perform these services in a community setting, the DAP and deputy registrar will review their credentials to ensure the facility medical director has applied the BC MQI dictionaries appropriately.

Health authority

Credentialing for physicians and surgeons who hold privileges at any health authority facility is performed by the health authority. This includes assessing eligibility for MSP billings for restricted services within health authority facilities.

For further information, please contact the health authority medical affairs office.

Community-based solo practices

Many medical offices are owner-operated solo practices. In these instances, the physician or surgeon may not hold privileges with a health authority. They also may not have gone through a credentialing process for restricted services with the health authority. The physician or surgeon in this case is licensed to their scope of practice through the ºÚÁÏÉç.

To apply for a provision of MSP restricted services with the ºÚÁÏÉç, physicians and surgeons are required to complete the MSP Restricted Services Credentialing Application.

For MSP billing purposes for a restricted service, the ºÚÁÏÉç will review the associated credentials required to be eligible to bill for these services. The ºÚÁÏÉç will notify MSP of the eligibility.

Community-based multi-practitioner facilities

In community-based multi-practitioner facilities, the medical director and ownership are responsible for ensuring the physicians and surgeons practising in their facility are appropriately credentialed, either through the health authority or the ºÚÁÏÉç.

To apply for a provision of MSP restricted services with the ºÚÁÏÉç, physicians and surgeons are required to complete the MSP Restricted Services Credentialing Application.
