Notification of Bylaw Amendments: Part 10
On September 24, 2021, the Board approved the addition of Part 10 to the Bylaws under the Health Professions Act, RSBC 1996, c.183, specifically, sections 10-1, 10-2, 10-3, 10-4, and 10-5.
By way of background, the Ministry of Health (MOH) is leading an initiative to legally allow hospital operating rooms in BC to use anesthesia assistants (AA) as “physician extenders” to provide team-based anesthesia care to patients. A Provincial Anesthesia Assistant Implementation Working Group was formed by the MOH in November 2019 to strengthen, streamline and support AA practice in BC. AAs are not regulated in BC and, therefore, do not have a legally defined scope of practice.
The bylaw amendments have been posted for a three-month notification period, giving registrants and other interested parties the opportunity to review and comment.
