Amendment to current section 2-24: Associate physician – acute care
On May 29, 2020, the Ministry of Health approved the ������’s proposed addition of a new class of registration namely, the “associate physician” class (section 2-24). This class provides a route for registration for international medical graduates as associate physicians, who are not otherwise eligible for full or provisional licence in BC, in order to provide much-needed service in acute care settings.

The intention of the proposed amendments to the current section 2-24 is to clarify that this class applies only to associate physicians practising in acute care settings.

New section 2-XX: Associate physician – community primary care class
The proposed amendments include the implementation of a new class of licensure specific to associate physicians in community settings. This would permit physicians who are not eligible for full or provisional registration as a family physician to practise under the direction and supervision of a family physician in a community-based primary care setting. 

New section 2-XX: Restricted – American Board of Medical Specialties certified physicians
The proposed amendments include the implementation of a restricted class of licensure for US trained physicians who are not currently eligible for full or provisional licensure in BC but who may be eligible in the restricted class without having to undergo further assessment or additional training. To be registered in this class, physicians must have completed three years of accredited postgraduate training in a training program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and achieved certification in one of the following with the American Board of Medical Specialties: pediatrics, emergency medicine, or internal medicine. 

The bylaw amendments have been posted for a 30-day notification period, giving ������ registrants and other interested parties the opportunity to review and comment.
