Administrative

Physicians and surgeons working in specific administrative roles within the healthcare system in British Columbia may be granted registration in the administrative class. Registrants of this class are limited to the provision of administrative services and may not provide direct patient care.

Scope

Applicants must provide administrative services in one of four distinct roles to be eligible for registration in the administrative class. These roles are:

  • A medical appointment to the public service or the Ministry of Health of British Columbia,
  • A medical appointment to the Mental Health Review Board,
  • For administrative or teaching purposes to the Faculty of Medicine, UBC, or
  • For administrative or teaching purposes to the ºÚÁÏÉç of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

Requirements

To be granted administrative registration, an applicant must:

  • have a medical degree,
  • have completed postgraduate training consistent with the applicant’s defined responsibilities and acceptable to the registration committee,
  • meet the ºÚÁÏÉç’s English language proficiency requirements
  • have Canadian citizenship, be a permanent resident or be legally able to live and work in British Columbia, and
  • have an offer of a medical appointment with the public service, the Ministry of Health of British Columbia, or the Mental Health Review Board; or an administrative or teaching role at the Faculty of Medicine, UBC or ºÚÁÏÉç of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

Maintaining the licence

Ongoing registration and licensure in the administrative class is maintained by:

  • satisfactory completion of the annual licence renewal form,
  • online payment of the annual licence renewal fee as detailed in Schedule A of the ºÚÁÏÉç Bylaws,
  • payment of any other outstanding fine, fee, penalty fee, debt, levy or costs owed to the ºÚÁÏÉç,
  • on-going compliance with continuing competency requirements,
  • on-going professional liability coverage or protection, and
  • provision of certificates of professional conduct, where applicable.

The annual licence renewal process is accessed through the registrant portal. Registrants will be notified by email of the licence renewal process in late December or early January each year.

Penalties and fines

Registrants must complete the annual licensure process by March 1 to avoid a $500 penalty. The penalty increases by $100 increments each month until the process is completed.

Failure to complete the annual licensure process will also result in the suspension of a registrant’s license on April 1. The licence will be reinstated when the annual licence renewal form is completed to the satisfaction of the ºÚÁÏÉç, and online payment of all outstanding fees and penalties are made.
