PPEP assessments
Quality improvement approach
All registrants strive to provide the highest quality care to their patients; nevertheless, it's always possible to improve quality.
A quality improvement approach does not remove the need for quality assurance. Quality assurance establishes that a registrant’s performance meets a standard that ensures patient safety. Quality improvement is a framework to systematically enhance registrant performance in providing quality care. Together, quality improvement and quality assurance lead to safe, effective health care.

Participant selection
The PPEP recognizes each registrant’s practice is unique, and different practices benefit from different assessment approaches. There are three types of PPEP assessments:
Participants are selected through specific criteria aimed at facilitating quality improvement in clinical practice. Participation in PPEP assessments is not related to complaints or disciplinary matters in any way.
Your clinical office may be selected for an office assessment or medical device reprocessing assessment at any time; these have a different focus and are not related to peer or self-directed assessments.
Participation in PPEP is mandated by the Health Professions Act, RSBC 1996, c.183, and sections 1-19 and 9-1 of the Bylaws made under the Act.
Frequency of peer and self-directed assessments
Registrants are eligible for re-selection or subsequent assessment approximately five years after their previous assessment, as practice attributes may change over time. Although eligible, you may not necessarily be re-selected in five years. However, most registrants will participate in a PPEP assessment several times over their career.
