Anesthesiologists and those providing family practice anesthesia (FPA) in dental facilities may be required to complete a practice environment assessment and a peer assessment of their practice starting in 2024.
The practice environment assessment will assess the provision of minimal, moderate, deep sedation, and general anesthesia (including total intravenous anesthesia) in dental facilities to ensure the care provided in dental facilities upholds a consistent level of safe patient care expected in other medical and surgical facilities.
A peer assessment will focus on the review of clinical records for selected patients, including the sedation and/or general anesthetic record. A review of the dental aspects of patient care is not within the scope of a peer assessment.
The goal of the peer assessment is to provide educational support and help registrants meet appropriate and current standards of practice. Assessments are not punitive and are not linked to any disciplinary or complaint process.
More detailed information on assessments for anesthesia in dental facilities can be found on the ºÚÁÏÉç website, including a list of questions and answers from the webinar on January 11, 2024.
