What is PPEP and why?
The Physician Practice Enhancement Program (PPEP) is a collegial program that provides feedback on clinical practice and recommendations for practice improvement.
The program is educational, focused on quality improvement, and committed to partnering with physicians and surgeons in their ongoing commitment to quality patient care.
Registrants must meet the for:
- anesthesiology, or
- family practice anesthesia.
Registrants participating in the PPEP may be eligible for continuing professional development (CPD) credits through the ºÚÁÏÉç of Family Physicians of Canada or the Royal ºÚÁÏÉç of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The ºÚÁÏÉç has the authority to assess the professional performance of an anesthesiologist or FPA for the purposes of quality assurance under the authority of the Health Professions Act (HPA), and sections 1-19 and 9-1 of the ºÚÁÏÉç Bylaws under the HPA.
Anesthesiologists and FPAs, who provide community-based care in dental facilities, are required to participate in the PPEP at different points in time in their career.
An anesthesiologist or FPA selected for an assessment must co-operate fully with the committee and its assessors under section 9-1(3) of the ºÚÁÏÉç Bylaws.
All information collected through the PPEP is confidential, protected under section 26.1 of the HPA, and will only be used to guide learning and direct recommended outcome activities.
Without the anesthesiologist or FPA’s permission, the information gathered through the PPEP cannot be shared with other areas of the ºÚÁÏÉç, including any disciplinary processes or accessed under freedom of information requests. Any serious clinical care or practice concerns may be referred for an independent inquiry committee review.
